Far Out West

Where cowboys and aliens clash!

Technology: Unity
Date: November 2021

A passion project of mine was a western style first-person-shooter. I started this project out of my like of the genre and my desire to learn more about systems design from the ground up. The end result is 4 levels of rootin' tootin' carnage for the player to blast their way through.

Guns

The first step of making a first-person-shooter is having something that shoots. The player has a variety of guns at their disposal that all have their individual strengths. The revolver fires fast and accurately, the shotgun is devastating at close range, and the rifle pierces through everything. Casings get ejected from each gun when you reload.

The Player

The player is quite agile. Traditional first person movement is implemented along the ability for the player to crouch, jump, and slide. The player additionally has the ability to slow down time for a short period, allowing them to better aim their shots. When combined with the players ability to throw dynamite, their own thrown sticks can be shot out of the air.

Aliens!

There are a variety of enemies for the player to fight. Grunts wander around and try to blast the player. Drones fly erratically through the sky and launch volleys at the player. Armored soldiers have a tough exoskeleton that must be broken down before they can be damaged. Killing enemies will increase the players score.

The Big Bad Boss

The final challenge is an enormous mech. The mech can shot a devastating amount of projectiles at the player in between creating shockwaves with its huge robot legs. The boss can also call in drones for backup. On its shoulders are two turrets that can be individually destroyed. Defeating the boss allows the player to win the game!
